About The Birders of St. James

Great Egret

Welcome

For us, birding represents the experience and enjoyment of observing wild birds. Similar to all forms of enjoyment, there is no prescribed method with which to engage in it. We appreciate the term "birding" as it reflects the open-ended nature of the activity and encompasses all types of experiences, including auditory and visual ones.

The term birdwatching is also widely used, and many people use it interchangeably. There are no prerequisites to participate. One of our cherished sentiments originates from Birdability: Birding is inclusive for everyone and everybody—irrespective of age, experience, background, disabilities or other health issues.

This website is intended for anyone who has an interest in birds and birding, and wishes to expand their knowledge. Within these pages, we present our birding philosophy and share our experiences.  Through our organized bird walks, new and experienced birders learn something new. We offer tips, provide references, and suggest ways to cultivate your own relationship with birds. These relationships begin with our local and regional ecosystems and the type of habitat you provide on your own property. Birding leads to a better understanding of conservation.

The Birders of St. James will:

  • Provide resources, programs, and education for our members. These resources will enhance their own personal level of knowledge, experience, and interest in birds and their habitat. We wish to share the joy of birding.

  • Support and maintain our community's designation as an Audubon Bird Sanctuary. In addition, we will maintain our status as a Certified Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

  • Welcome everyone who is interested in bird conservation. We will share stories, tips, photos, and ideas that unite us all together in an ever-changing world.
